Landscape Painting on a Door

Medium: Painting

Supplies: acrylic paint, brushes, canvas (whatever that looks like to you)

My little sister is growing up. Yup, you heard me. Never thought it would happen, but here we are. At fourteen, she decided to completely redo her room. In fact, move to a completely different room! (Just across the hall, but still. Big changes, man.) She requested that I paint something on her door. I was not about to turn that down.

THE PAINTING IDEA ITSELF IS NOT MINE

My sister found a painting on Pinterest that she adored and wanted me to paint that specifically. Dude. She’s my little sister. How could I not say no? Plus, painting on a door? How fun is that!

Starting out, I decided to do a practice run on a much smaller canvas to try and get a feel of things. It was simple, a few mountains, the mist, waterfall, and a deer. Easy enough and I was able to get to work on the door right away.

Tips & Tricks: Always remember to put something down so you don’t get paint on anything you don’t want paint on. That should be pretty obvious but when inspiration strikes, I like to get going as soon as possible, throwing caution to the wind! “Oh yeah, I’ll be careful. I’m great at not getting paint on stuff.” Gets paint somehow all around my eye. On my foot, my arms. I don’t know how this happens.

We had sheets that I was able to use, but I ended up using an old sweatshirt. Yeah, I know, not the biggest thing to be covering a whole carpeted room (or at least, along one wall), but I worked with what I had at that moment. (The sheets were under the stairs, and I’d need to pull stuff out to get them, then put whatever I had pulled out back in and repeat it when I was done. I didn’t want to work so hard.)

Pitfalls (aka, what I learned the hard way): If you’re going to mix lots of black paint with water to make the most of it, don’t mix them in a bowl or on a plate. You will forget that it’s there, or possibly lose your balance and spill it on the floor that you totally did not cover with a sheet. Yeah……it didn’t turn out so good. And then you gotta run frantically around like a crazy person, grabbing some cleaner and an old towel or something to clean it up before you can actually start the painting. So, by the end of it, you might as well have gotten them sheets straight from the get-go.

But anyway, use a tall cup or jar for the paint and water mixture. You won’t have to worry so much about spilling easily. 😉

Outcome: It was mighty spectacular! Don’t be afraid to use however much paint you need, the more the better! I highly recommend you paint your sister’s door. It’s pretty exciting! And you might make some fun and goofy memories of hanging out with your sister in her new, clean room. 😉
