Building Your Portfolio

Building your portfolio is a fabulous way to show people what you can do. Especially for folks in the industry. If your portfolio is available through a website, it is easily accessible, and anyone can view it. It’s a great way for opportunities to open.

But say you’re in my shoes. Your last semester of school was devoted to building your portfolio. But now you’ve graduated, and you have a job lined up, how do you keep building your portfolio?

Here are a few ways to do so:

  • Stay connected within a community. Showcase your work to them, show them what you can do. You never know what opportunities may arise, whether that’s designing t-shirts for tractor pulls and youth groups or designing product labels for small businesses.
  • Find something that you’ve always wanted to try – design-wise. Whether it’s designing bookmarks or book covers or creating a fantastic poster in Photoshop. Create a bucket list of anything you want to try, then set aside time to learn and do it.
  • Design different compositions in different ways. Create a line of posters or rack cards, keeping the theme the same but each one is a little different.
  • Take a random business and design a new logo for them, a new website, etc.
