Cover Design Part 3 – The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

When I read the voyage of the dawn treader for the first time when I was younger, I never found it exciting. Watching the movie was so much easier for me. There was more action. But reading the book now as an adult, I catch so many more things and the meaning that C. S. Lewis was trying to convey is not lost to me anymore. The book is so much more meaningful. One scene that I particularly remember was when Lucy was reading through the spell book for the dufflepuds and she comes across one spell where she sees two of her friends from school, talking about her behind her back. I don’t remember what they said, but I remember Lucy’s reaction. She had grown sad and wondered why anyone would gossip about anyone else. That was the first time when I related so much to a character, the first time one could say I considered a fictional character a friend.

While designing for this book, I wasn’t sure I could include something along those lines for the cover design. Though it would be fun to try, I would have added too much for too little time. Naturally, my second choice was to create the Dawn Treader at sea.

Using a ship image for reference, I created the ship in a few hours, playing around with the colors and how the different strokes worked in relation to one another.

Overall, this was a more simpler design, but one that I am particularly fond of.
