The Perfect Art Studio

I do not consider myself a maximalist. I’d say I enjoy a more minimalist space that isn’t too cluttered. I’ve always enjoyed cleaning and organizing spaces, finding new spots for things to go, and how they may or may not fit perfectly.  That being said, I have had a few different creative spaces in my artsy life, but I still aspire to what my dream space would look like. Growing up my art studio was always my room. My closet was full of sketchbooks and tons and tons and TONS of pencils, sharpeners, and anything in between. Starting high school, my art studio got moved to a room off the kitchen at my parent’s home. I got a new art table (an old door on sawhorses) and tons of storage. It was so great, yet it still always managed to get messy as the projects that I was working on continued to pile up. Eventually, I bought a new table, not quite as big as the table/desk, but classier. More storage came into the equation, and I actually got shelves. Two whole shelves work amazingly for displaying projects in the making. But this still was not my dream space.

While I tried to find pictures of what I wanted, I couldn’t seem to, so I drew a rough sketch. I would love a huge room with many windows ‘cause we gotta have natural light when I make art. There’s just something about shadows and cheap lighting that drives me up a creek. I will have an art table or easel, one or the other, in the middle of the room, and I don’t have to worry about getting paint on anything. If paint falls on the floor, meh. If it splatters on the windows or ceiling, I don’t have to run around in a frenzy trying to clean it up in time before it dries. There will be one wall where I can put shelves and storage containers but that’s it. I don’t want a cluttered space.

But, if I never live in a place where I can have a giant art studio, I love working in three-season rooms, or rooms with many windows and the outside is growing inside. Some examples would be these. A calm space for me to work and relax is all that I need.
