Need a last-minute craft for a fundraiser? Wood burning spoons might be your answer.
My youth group was brainstorming ways to raise money for Speed the Light, a ministry to help missionaries. There were a couple craft fairs throughout the small towns where I live, and we were all aiming to hit both. I promised a craft to sell, and I had only a couple weeks, along with school and work. I didn’t have a lot of time.

Never having tried wood burning before, I decided this was the perfect time to try it out. Ha, when I didn’t have enough time to practice. I jumped right in. Couldn’t be that hard, right? It’s just like drawing. Except the pencil you’re using could burn you.

I started out with sanding the spoons down. I had twenty-four to do and that took a few hours. Not the most fun but it had to be done. The next step was to sketch out a design. I chose relatively simple designs that I was able to sketch pretty quick. Then came the fun part.
The wood burning itself went faster than I expected, I was able to complete eighteen in a little over five hours. However, the fumes were not particularly enjoyable, and I had to be careful with inhaling too much. The sanding, though not the best part of this project, was extremely important. I noticed that in the portions that I hadn’t sanded as well, the wood burner got caught and you can’t erase a mistake in this type of art.

Overall, I was able to complete this project in time, and sold about twenty-one. It was a quick and easy project and turned out nicely.
